Soundtrack for a cycle

“Oh I might have to wait
I’ll never give up
I guess it’s half timing and the other half’s luck
Wherever you are
Whenever it’s right
You’ll come out of nowhere and into my life” – Micheal Bublé, Haven’t Met You Yet

I have a little ritual. Ahead of each cycle, I put together a playlist (the Man throws in a couple of tracks too). Some of it is hopeful and lifting, carrying hidden messages to eggs and embryos, but there’s also a bit of good old-fashioned mush, a touch of humour, and a couple of tracks that will probably make no sense to anyone but us.

I decided two cycles ago, for instance, that Michael Bublé’s Haven’t Met You Yet was the ideal theme song for doing IVF again (and again). Go on, listen to it again, now that the idea’s been put in your head. See what I mean? The idea that there is, somewhere out there, this perfect baby meant just for you and, up until now, it simply wasn’t the right time for you to meet. Cheesy, yes, delusional, perhaps, but still comforting. I listen to it a lot.

Anyway, I thought I’d share a sampling of my latest list, which includes some old favourites and a couple of new additions (it might seem long but it’s not when you think about the amount of pacing and walking around each cycle entails!!). I’ll add a few more tracks along the way, and the Man will probably attempt to sneak in the Star Wars theme song again before the embryo transfer.

If nothing else, it’s a great introduction to the crazy, eclectic mess that is my head. Not every song may resonate (and you may raise your eyebrows at some choices) but, hey, it works for me, both in the pensive moments and when I need a laugh or a lift.

Note that these are all Spotify links. If you’re not a Spotify user, sorry! You can probably also find all these on YouTube or iTunes.

Maybe Baby (IVF #5)

Haven’t Met You Yet, Michael Bublé (see above)
Many the Miles, Brave, and I Choose You, Sara Bareilles
Stronger, Kelly Clarkson (I had to)

A Thousand Years, Christina Perri
Helplessly Hoping, Crosby, Stills & Nash (I am not old)
A Head Full of Dreams, Coldplay
Magic, Coldplay
Yellow, Coldplay (Live from Spotify London)
Hole-hearted, Extreme (also because everyone thinks they only ever sang More Than Words)
Soulshine, Gov’t Mule
I’m Sticking With You, The Velvet Underground (Ok, this has to be the ULTIMATE embryo transfer song)
The Passenger, Iggy Pop (self-explanatory)
A Sky Full of Stars, Coldplays
Firestone, Kygo
Sail Away, David Gray
Photograph, Ed Sheeren (makes me cry every single time)
Stay with Me, Sam Smith
Free Fallin‘, Tom Petty (just because I like it)
Blank Space, Taylor Swift (like I said, some require a little imagination)
Just You and Me, Zee Avi
Love Will Take You, Angus & Julia Stone
Catch and Release, Matt Simons
Don’t Stop Believin, Journey (I had to, it’s the Man’s fav IVF song)
Bloom, The Paper Kites
I Won’t Back Down, Tom Petty
You and Me, Lifehouse
Brown Eyed Girl, Van Morrison (This is a special one because the Man calls it MY song)
Follow the Sun, Xavier Rudd
Shape of You, Ed Shereen (it’s all subjective!)
Happy, Pharrell Williams (well, yes)
Here Comes The Sun, George Harrison

I hope you enjoy it. And if you have other tracks to suggest, please do! Each cycle is always a bit of a journey, and a good playlist is a great travelling partner.

Oh, and May the Fourth Be With You.

Ps: Apologies for the dud links in the earlier version, and thank you to those who messaged to alert me to them!!!
